There have only been two studies looking at the effects of cannabis on thyroid hormone levels and the results of each suggest that the plant does not create any significant changes in thyroid hormone levels.

The first study done in 2012 specifically looked at thyroid hormone levels and how they correlated to various amounts of THC in a participant’s system. No matter how much THC was ingested by a participant, thyroid hormone levels remained the same.

The second study looked at both thyroid function and autoimmunity in cannabis users. It was found that cannabis users had no association with thyroid dysfunction but did have an association with lower levels of thyrotropin, also called thyroid-stimulating hormone or TSH, which is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates thyroid hormone production. This information has lead to more questions as to whether or not cannabis has the potential to treat patients who have elevated TSH.
